Silenus was an adventurer, who spent many years wandering faraway lands in search of fame and fortune. Over the years Silenus met many fellow adventurers whom he would come to call, friends. But sadly, adventuring life took its toll, and several Silenus’ dear friends fell foul of hazardous dungeon traps and wandering monsters.
Thus when Silensus retired from adventuring life, he set up a small school for adventurers. His hope being, that he could prepare young adventurers for the hazards of adventuring life. As part of the school, Silenus constructed a wizard’s maze – the Pyramid of Silenus – better known today as the Folly of Silenus. Back in the day, to graduate from school – each student had to enter the Pyramid of Silenus and return with an idol that was hidden inside a special chamber within the maze. Upon returning to the school with the idol, the student graduated as an adventurer, ready to explore real dungeons!
Sadly Silenus succumbed to old age and passed on to the next world, with Silenus gone the School of Adventuring lost its benefactor and closed down. Now all that remains of the wizard’s legacy, is the Folly. Yet even today, it is still enchanted with mighty magic, still ready to teach young adventures a thing or two.
This adventure site is set in a forest not too far from a local village where the wizard Silenus once had his School for Adventurers. The structure on the surface is just the tip of a far larger magical wizard maze that is hidden underground. Entry into the wizard’s maze is achieved by descending a vertical shaft (called the Well of Silenus) down into the underground chambers of the maze. The entire site was once a training area for apprentice adventurers, thus the complex was built at least one day’s journey from the closest village (requiring adventurers to camp overnight in the wild), the layout of the maze was designed to be difficult to navigate, while each chamber provided challenges that would test the skills and wisdom of a would-be adventurer – while at the same time not being so deadly as to kill everyone who enters! Silenus had even captured and trained some of the monsters he used to populate the maze, but Silenus has been dead for many years and the monsters that remain are quite hungry. While new unwanted inhabitants have moved in now that the complex is neglected.
Most folk who live nearby know about the existence of the Folly and would be more than willing to give directions about how to find it. But accurate information about what is inside the structure has long since blurred into a mix of folklore and gossip. Generally, the Pyramid is avoided by most people, after all it is the business of mysterious wizards and foolish adventurers. But mainly because the woodland around the site is not safe at night because of feral forest goblins who torment travellers and remote farmsteads.
